Richard has published 20 books, more than 1000 magazine articles, a score of documentaries, several CD-ROMs, and all manner of digital media.

He has lectured at the Smithsonian, the National Geographic Society, the Explorers Club and many other notable venues.

He writes the monthly feature column for the Extraordinary Travelers Club, and produces and hosts The Emmy-winning “Richard Bangs’ Adventures with Purpose, as seen on national public television.

Explorer

Richard Bangs has spent over 50 years as an explorer, leading first descents of 35 rivers around the globe, including the Yangtze in China and the Zambezi in Southern Africa.

During that period he founded Sobek Expeditions, the first multi-national river running company and the pioneering outfitter for global active wilderness travel.

Entrepreneur

In the early '90s, Sobek merged with Mountain Travel to form MT Sobek, a leader in adventure and eco-travel. Richard launched TerraQuest, the first online travel product, before joining Microsoft as the founder and editor-in-chief of Mungo Park, an innovative publishing venture.

As a founding executive of Expedia.com, he contributed as Editor-at-Large, created and published Expedia Travels Magazine, led Expedia Radio, and launched Expedia Cafes. He served as President of Outward Bound, initiated Slate.com's “Well Traveled” series, led MSNBC’s “Great Escapes”, and produced “Richard Bangs Adventures” for Yahoo!
